Why is the FCT minister, Wike pointing an accusing finger at Amaech's wife and threatening to resign as Minister?
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has fired back at former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, accusing his wife of benefitting from a monthly ₦4 billion payout from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, July 4, Wike challenged President Bola Tinubu to release the forensic audit report of the NDDC, saying the document contains explosive revelations implicating Amaechi’s wife.
“Her company received ₦4 billion every month to train Niger Delta women. That’s ₦48 billion in one year alone,” Wike alleged.
The former Rivers State Governor declared that he would resign as FCT Minister if the audit report, once released, does not confirm his allegations.
"I plead with Mr. President to help Nigerians by releasing that document. If the report does not confirm what I’ve said, I will resign as Minister of the FCT. I don’t worship office,” Wike said.
He added that the forensic audit, which was commissioned by the Federal Government in 2021, was buried by former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami under the Buhari administration.
"Who buried it? Malami, the former Attorney General. Let Nigerians see the report,” he insisted.
CBI News reports that the forensic audit was initiated to scrutinise the financial dealings and project implementations of the NDDC from 2001 to August 2019. Its objective was to uncover mismanagement, misappropriation, and irregularities that plagued the commission.
Wike insisted that the report holds the key to unravelling how Amaechi’s wife allegedly became an industrialist.
“That is how Amaechi’s wife became an industrialist—₦4 billion every month,” Wike claimed.
The minister, however, clarified that he was not presenting the report as infallible, but called for transparency, saying Nigerians deserve to know the truth.
"Let Nigerians judge. Let them see the report for themselves,” he added.
