Africa’s top health official has issued a stark warning. If the Ebola outbreak in Congo is not contained fast, it could become the worst the continent has ever seen.
The head of Africa’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention did not mince words on Tuesday. Speaking at a virtual meeting of African heads of state in Burundi, Director General Jean Kaseya warned that the Ebola outbreak in Congo is on track to become the most severe on record, cbinews.tv reports.
The reason is simple and alarming. Tens of thousands of people who have been in contact with infected patients still have not been traced. Without urgent action, Kaseya said, the situation could quickly spiral.
“If we don’t stop the outbreak very soon it will be worse than what we had in West Africa and eastern DRC,” Kaseya told leaders.
He was pointing to two grim benchmarks. The 2014 to 2016 outbreak that tore through Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone killed more than 11,000 people. Then there was the 2018 outbreak in eastern Congo, which was less deadly but still devastating.
Now, with contact tracing lagging and cases still emerging, the Africa CDC is sounding the alarm that Congo could surpass both if the response does not scale up immediately.
