Colombian military plane crashes near Colombia–Peru border...
A Colombian Air Force aircraft has crashed in the southern part of the country near the border with Peru, officials confirmed on Monday.
The plane, a Hercules transport aircraft used for conveying troops, reportedly came down near the town of Puerto Leguízamo in Putumayo province.
Colombia’s Defence Minister, Pedro Sánchez, disclosed that the aircraft suffered a tragic accident shortly after takeoff.
He said, “The plane suffered a tragic accident while it was taking off from Puerto Leguízamo, transporting troops of our security forces.”
Authorities have yet to confirm the number of persons on board at the time of the crash.
However, local media reports indicated that scores of passengers may have been on the aircraft.
Emergency responders have been dispatched to the crash site as efforts intensify to locate survivors and assess the situation.
While the Defence Minister did not confirm casualties, he described the incident as a national tragedy.
Sánchez said the development was “deeply sad for the country.”
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the cause of the crash as more details emerge.
