China commits to cut emissions by 2035 amid global pressure.
China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has for the first time set an absolute target to cut its emissions.
In a video address to the UN in New York, President Xi Jinping pledged to reduce emissions across the economy by 7–10% by 2035, adding that China would “strive to do better.”
CBI News reports that the move comes as the US scales back its climate commitments, with President Donald Trump this week dismissing climate change as a “con job.”
Critics however, argue that China’s plan still falls short of what is needed to keep global climate goals within reach.
While the main stage for global climate negotiations will be November’s COP30 summit in Brazil, this week’s UN meeting carries weight as countries race to submit updated climate plans.
These pledges, due every five years under the Paris Agreement were supposed to be delivered in February but are now being hurried in before the end of September.
