When disaster strikes, aid crosses borders fast — and Beijing is stepping up big time for Venezuela.
So, here’s what’s happening, according to cbinews.tv: China is sending 100 million yuan, that’s about $14.7 million, in emergency aid to Venezuela after two devastating earthquakes left more than 1,450 people dead.
Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday that the Chinese government will ship free relief supplies “as soon as possible” to help with rescue efforts and rebuilding. They’re also handing over satellite images of the hardest-hit areas to help teams on the ground.
Guo added: “China stands ready to provide further support for Venezuela as the situation evolves.” Chinese leader Xi Jinping already sent condolences to Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez on Friday, promising disaster relief and reconstruction help.
Tragically, eight Chinese nationals are confirmed dead from the quakes, with one still missing, Chinese state media reported Monday.
Venezuela isn’t facing this alone. Rodriguez says 24 nations have pitched in with 521 tons of supplies, 86 search dogs, and over 2,700 rescue workers. The US has been active too — helicopters are flying in aid, 230 more US military personnel are coming to reopen a key seaport and boost airport capacity, and a 250-strong US disaster response team is already on the ground. That’s despite the US capturing former president Nicolas Maduro in a military raid on Caracas back in January.
The UN migration agency warns the scale is massive. Based on damage and population data, up to 6.76 million people could need shelter, clean water, healthcare and basic relief items.
This comes at a brutal time for Venezuela. These are the worst earthquakes in over a century, and they’ve hit a country already gutted by more than a decade of economic collapse. Hospitals and public services are stretched thin, millions have fled, and the UN estimates physical damage at $6.7 billion — around 6% of Venezuela’s GDP.
