Chelsea is breaking the bank! The Blues have just agreed a massive £117m deal for England star Morgan Rogers and it is a record breaker on two fronts.
It is official, or at least almost. Chelsea has agreed a club record £117 million deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
cbinews.tv reports that the 23-year-old will put pen to paper on a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for a further year.
Rogers is expected to have his medical on Monday after returning from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.
And this is not just big for Chelsea; it is huge for English football. The fee sets a new transfer record for an English player, eclipsing the £116m Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.
It also makes Rogers the most expensive signing in Chelsea history, overtaking the £107m the club paid for Enzo Fernandez back in 2023.
The move comes as new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso begins to shape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
It is quite the rise for Rogers. He was previously on the books at Manchester City before joining Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for just £8m, rising to £15m. Now, due to a 20 percent profit sell on clause, Boro are set to pocket at least £20.4m from this deal, which they believe is an English record for a sell on fee.
Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Unai Emery side and was part of the Villa team that won the Europa League last season. He has 21 senior caps for England and featured six times at this summer World Cup.
He becomes the second Villa midfielder to leave this week after Youri Tielemans £35m move to Manchester United. Villa, however, have already moved for replacements, bringing in Switzerland Johan Manzambi for over £50m from Freiburg and lining up Wolves Joao Gomes for £38m.
So how will he fit in at Chelsea? That is the big question. Rogers has been a Chelsea target for over two years, so this is no panic buy, even after a disappointing 10th placed finish last season. It shows Stamford Bridge is still a huge pull, despite missing out on European football and beating London rivals Arsenal to his signature.
The interesting part will be his link up with Cole Palmer. The pair are best friends from their Manchester City academy days. In fact, Palmer famous Cold celebration was inspired by Rogers when he was at Middlesbrough. They both play in similar attacking roles and both can operate across the front line alongside Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens and new boy Geovany Quenda. Alejandro Garnacho is expected to make way.
Will they play together under Alonso, who has used both a back four and back five in his time at Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen? That is a headache Alonso will be happy to have.
