A fresh media-politics showdown has erupted in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city as Channels Television publicly challenged FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to provide evidence for claims that journalists and media organisations benefitted from controversial land allocations in Abuja’s Guzape District.
Channels Television has strongly denied allegations by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike that the media organisation and some journalists profited from land allocations in Guzape District.
CBI News notes that in a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, the broadcaster dismissed the claims as “false and defamatory,” insisting it has no direct or indirect interest in any land transactions within Guzape or any other part of the Federal Capital Territory.
The dispute followed remarks credited to Wike during a recent media appearance in which he alleged that some journalists and media houses benefitted from FCT land allocations while criticising his administration’s efforts to address alleged irregularities in land administration.
“Do you know how many people in Channels TV that I gave land?” Wike reportedly said, adding, “The land Channels built on, did they buy it?”
Reacting to the comments, Channels Television stated that the minister’s accusations were unsubstantiated and appeared aimed at discrediting independent journalism.
“We are not making money from Guzape land or any other FCT land,” the statement read.
The station further stressed that it operates strictly as a media organisation regulated by the National Broadcasting Commission and has no involvement in land allocation or real estate activities.
Channels TV also challenged the minister to publicly provide evidence linking any of its journalists or the organisation itself to questionable land deals or withdraw the allegations.
The broadcaster described the accusations as an attempt to divert attention from ongoing controversies surrounding land administration policies in the FCT.
The exchange has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the relationship between political power, media independence, and transparency in Abuja’s land allocation system.
Observers say the public clash could further intensify tensions between sections of the media and the FCT administration under Wike’s leadership.
