Scottish champions exit 4-2 on aggregate as early McCowan strike proves insufficient.
Celtic bowed out of the Europa League on Thursday after losing 4-2 on aggregate to Stuttgart, despite securing a 1-0 away victory in the second leg of their knockout phase play-off tie.
After last week’s 4-1 defeat in Glasgow left Martin O’Neill’s side facing a three-goal deficit, they made the perfect start in Germany when Luke McCowan struck inside the opening minute to raise hopes of a remarkable comeback.
However, Celtic were unable to find the additional goals required and their elimination means the Scottish champions are still waiting for a first European knockout tie win since 2004.
Their domestic dominance is also being tested this season, with Hearts mounting a strong challenge at home.
Stuttgart progress to the last 16 and will discover in Friday’s draw whether they meet Porto or Braga in the next round.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest aim to join Aston Villa in the last 16 later on Thursday, carrying a commanding 3-0 advantage into the second leg of their tie against Fenerbahce at the City Ground.
