So, no change from the CBN this time round, the big rate everyone has been watching is staying put.
Here’s the gist, as reported by cbinews.tv:
The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria has decided to hold its benchmark interest rate at 26.5 per cent. Yes, for the second time in a row.
CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, made the announcement on Tuesday after wrapping up the Committee’s 306th meeting in Abuja. In his words: “The Committee decided as follows: retain the monetary policy rate at 26.5 per cent.” Short and straight to the point.
This comes after the MPC held rates at its last meeting, and that 50-basis-point cut we saw back in February 2026.
What’s interesting is that this hold is happening even though inflation has finally cooled - just a tiny bit.
Fresh data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows Nigeria’s headline inflation eased to 15.91 per cent in June 2026, down from 15.93 per cent in May. It’s marginal, but it’s actually the first drop after three months of steady increases - from 15.06 per cent in February, to 15.38 per cent in March, 15.69 per cent in April, and 15.93 per cent in May.
For now though, the CBN is playing it safe and keeping things as they are.
