The committee withdraws its call for the sack of CAC Registrar-General Hussaini Magaji after he apologises for failing to honour invitations, pledging improved legislative engagement.
The Senate Committee on Finance has withdrawn its earlier call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, following his formal apology to lawmakers.
The decision was taken during the committee’s budget defence session on Monday, after Magaji appeared before the panel and expressed remorse for failing to personally honour previous invitations.
The committee had earlier criticised what it described as repeated non-compliance by the CAC boss, noting that he often delegated senior officers to attend meetings or respond to official correspondence instead of appearing in person. This prompted the committee to initially recommend his removal.
Chairman of the committee, Sen. Sani Musa, said the recommendation stemmed from a perceived pattern of disregard for legislative oversight responsibilities. However, shortly after the resolution, Magaji arrived before the committee, leading to further deliberations.
In his explanation, the CAC Registrar-General tendered an unreserved apology, attributing the lapse to a communication gap between the commission’s staff and the National Assembly liaison office. He explained that he was in Lagos when the invitation was received but cut short his engagements and directed staff to inform the committee he was en route, although he arrived late.
Magaji assured lawmakers that measures had been put in place to prevent a recurrence, including the establishment of a dedicated liaison office to handle all matters relating to the National Assembly. He reaffirmed his respect for the committee and accepted full responsibility for the oversight.
Following his apology, several senators spoke in his defence. A motion to rescind the earlier call for his sack was moved by Sen. Isa Jibrin and seconded by Sen. Sani Daura, effectively resolving the matter.
CBI News reports that the committee subsequently directed Magaji to reappear at a later date to defend the CAC’s performance for the 2024 and 2025 budgets, as well as present the 2026 budget proposal.
