In just one day, Borno State has recorded nearly 300 fresh suspected cholera cases – and officials say they're in a race against time to stop the spread.
According to cbinewstv, the numbers have jumped sharply. Borno has gone from around 3,000 suspected cases to 4,204, after 274 new cases were logged in the last 24 hours. The death toll now stands at 39.
The update was given on Tuesday by Dr Jacob Thlizer, the Incident Manager at the Public Health Emergency Operation Centre, during a sensitisation meeting in Maiduguri for stakeholders across the state's 27 local government areas.
Dr Thlizer said the new cases came from 36 wards across the worst-hit areas. The breakdown of total suspected cases so far looks like this:
MMC: 2,404
Jere: 1,214
Konduga: 275
Mafa: 184
Monguno: 90
Kaga: 18
Bama: 8
Kwarya Kusar: 8
Ngala: 2
Maigumeri: 1
He added that the state government has already kicked off a full response – activating the Incident Management System, holding coordination meetings with health partners, running awareness campaigns in hotspot communities, and procuring emergency medical commodities.
The Permanent Secretary at the Borno Ministry of Health and Human Services, Shetima Muhammad, said two dedicated treatment centres have been set up: the Emergency and Infectious Disease Centre in Njimtilo, and a 1,000-bed infectious disease camp at Nganaram.
He noted that Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has also approved the immediate delivery of drugs and consumables to the camps.
His message to residents was simple: keep your environment clean, practise proper hygiene, boil your drinking water, and report any symptoms of acute watery diarrhoea to the nearest health facility immediately.
Speaking at the meeting, the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, promised full government backing for health workers.
"I want to thank you and commend your efforts. If there are any hitches anywhere, please let us know so that we can confront this menace. In the last three or four days, a lot of efforts have been made," he said.
