Fancy adding Mickey, Marvel and Baby Yoda to your next TikTok? Disney just made it officially allowed.
In a move no one really saw coming, Disney has just signed a deal with TikTok that lets users add actual extracts from Disney films and characters to their videos.
The House of Mouse announced the partnership on Wednesday, calling it a “first-of-its-kind agreement” — and honestly, it’s huge for creators.
According to Disney, “The agreement will bring creators to the forefront of Disney+, with a curated feed of fan-created content featuring our characters and stories.”
So, in other words, your fan edits could end up front and centre on Disney+ itself.
Disney kept tight-lipped on the finer details of the content sharing deal, slipping the announcement into its quarterly earnings report. That report, by the way, showed revenue up 7% to $25.2 billion for the quarter ending 27 June.
The company said the TikTok tie-up is part of its wider plan of “using advanced technologies to power our storytelling and increase monetisation and returns”.
And it makes sense. Disney+ has already started rolling out vertical video feeds for previews of Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars — basically its own version of TikTok scrolling.
On the money side, net profit dipped to $2.8 billion from $5.9 billion a year ago, partly thanks to a bigger tax bill, but the results still beat most analyst expectations.
Creators, start your edits.
