Local government workers in Benue State have downed tools, kicking off a two-week warning strike that could disrupt services across the state.
According to reports from cbinews.tv, local government employees across Benue State on Thursday began a 14-day warning strike over unpaid salaries and unresolved welfare issues.
The action was directed by the state leadership of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), led by President Joshua Adiniya and Secretary Aséneshi Yusuf. In a notice titled “Notification of Strike Action” dated May 13, 2026, the union explained that the decision followed repeated failures by the state government to meet key demands.
At the top of the list is the payment of March and April 2026 salaries owed to workers. The union is also demanding the unconditional release and implementation of pending promotions, resolution of issues affecting BEPCON remittances, reinstatement of disengaged 2011/2012 workers, and full payment of outstanding salary arrears.
NULGE said it had already issued the required 14-day notice and a follow-up reminder, but claimed the government did not act within the period, leaving workers with “no option” but to proceed with the strike.
Speaking to journalists, the NULGE president alleged that the state government owes local government workers as many as seven months’ salary arrears.
When contacted, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Terna Ayu, declined to comment on the matter.
The strike comes at a sensitive time, ahead of upcoming general elections, and marks the first major industrial action by local government workers in the state in nearly three years under Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration. The governor had previously assured workers during Workers’ Day celebrations of his commitment to their welfare.
