Bayern just pulled off a statement signing — and it comes with a proper emotional backstory.
Big news out of Munich, as reported by cbinews.tv — Bayern have snapped up Morocco’s World Cup sensation Ismael Saibari from Dutch champs PSV Eindhoven. The fee? Around €55 million, which works out to roughly £47 million.
The 25-year-old has penned a deal that runs until June 2031, and he’ll be rocking the No. 34 shirt for the Bavarians. And that number isn’t random. Saibari picked it as a tribute to his mate Abdelhak Nouri, the former Ajax talent who tragically collapsed during a friendly against Werder Bremen back in July 2017.
“He survived but hasn’t been able to move unaided since then,” Saibari told Bayern’s website. “I’m supporting him by wearing the 34 — it was his last number.” Proper class.
If you watched the World Cup, you’ll know exactly why Bayern wanted him. Saibari’s been on fire for Morocco — three goals in four games, including that ice-cold shootout winner to knock out the Netherlands on Monday. That result booked the Atlas Lions a Round of 16 clash with Canada this Saturday.
Born in Spain, Saibari’s an attacking midfielder who’ll give Vincent Kompany some serious depth up top. Picture him linking up with Michael Olise, Luis Díaz and Jamal Musiala just behind Harry Kane. Not a bad front line, eh?
He’s also a proven winner. Saibari helped PSV clinch the Eredivisie title three seasons on the bounce and was crowned the league’s player of the year last season.
