A family’s ties to terror just cost them decades behind bars, and the details are chilling.
Two women with close family ties to one of Nigeria’s most notorious bandit leaders have been handed hefty prison terms, according to cbinewstv.
On Friday, the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Safiya Salihu and Halima Abdullahi, the mother and sister of late terrorist kingpin Kachallah Ibrahim Battujo, to 40 years in prison each for terrorism-related offences.
Battujo himself was eliminated by Nigerian security forces on June 10, 2026, during an operation in a forest near Iluke, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
So what landed them in the dock? The Department of State Services (DSS) arrested both women for aiding and abetting Battujo’s activities. Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa handed down the sentences after they pleaded guilty to Counts 2, 4 and 5 of a five-count terrorism charge filed by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.
Here’s the breakdown, per cbinewstv:
Count 2: Both women admitted to passing information to Battujo via phone calls, an offence under Section 26 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Count 5: Mum, Safiya, also copped to hiding info about her son’s terrorism activities.
Count 4: Sister, Halima, admitted she kept quiet about the illegal firearms she saw at Battujo’s forest camp.
They did dodge two charges, though. Counts 1 and 3, which involved receiving N490,300 from Battujo and having a holy pilgrimage sponsored with terrorism proceeds, were struck out. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Oyedepo Rotimi, SAN, asked the court to drop those but push for convictions on the rest.
Each count carries a 20-year penalty, but Justice Yilwa ruled the sentences will run concurrently. That means Safiya and Halima will serve 40 years each, not 60. Once they’ve done their time, they’ll also go through a rehabilitation programme.
Brutal reality check: family loyalty doesn’t get you off the hook when terrorism’s involved.
