Barcelona and Spain have been dealt a major blow after midfielder Fermin Lopez suffered a serious foot injury that will keep him out of this summer’s World Cup.
Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez is set to miss this summer’s FIFA World Cup after suffering a foot fracture that will require surgery, cbinews.tv reports.
The 23-year-old picked up the injury during Barcelona’s 3-1 La Liga victory over Real Betis on Sunday, dealing a huge setback to both the player and the Spanish national team ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In a statement released on Monday, Barcelona confirmed that Fermin fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and will undergo surgery in the coming days.
“First-team player Fermin Lopez suffered a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot during yesterday’s match. The player will undergo surgical treatment,” the club said.
Fermin had been widely expected to earn a call-up from Spain coach Luis de la Fuente after impressing consistently for Barcelona over the past two seasons.
The young midfielder has become an important part of the Catalan side and already has seven appearances for the Spanish national team.
His absence is expected to be a significant blow for Spain as they prepare for the World Cup this summer.
