Atiku: Why I Couldn’t Fix PDP Crisis

Nigeria's former Vice President accuses APC of using PDP leaders against him and his allies.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed why he was unable to resolve the lingering crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) used some PDP leaders to frustrate efforts at building a formidable opposition.

“We couldn’t achieve that with the PDP because the APC government in power has decided to use some leaders of the party to frustrate efforts of having a strong opposition that could challenge the government,” he said.

According to him, the crisis in the PDP worsened as some senior members allegedly acted as agents of destabilisation.

CBI News understands that Atiku dismissed suggestions that he is desperate for power, insisting his political ambition has always been about rescuing Nigeria.

“I could have taken some firm decisions to fix the party if I were the chairman or secretary of the party, or someone who listened to me was the chairman or secretary. Sadly, the people occupying those positions have different interests that are mostly personal to them,” he stated.

The former vice president confirmed his membership in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that it was created to build a stronger political base for 2027.

“Regarding the ADC, our goal is to establish the structures of the party at the state level. We have already established the national leadership, and they are working on ensuring the state and local government structures are strengthened and ready for the 2027 elections,” he explained.

On Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Atiku said the country had experienced some progress but was far from the dreams of its founding fathers.

He accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of worsening poverty through the unplanned removal of fuel subsidy in 2023.

“When I was vice president, we proposed that the fuel subsidy be removed in four phases, and we engaged relevant stakeholders, including the labour unions, throughout the process.

“But President Tinubu’s decision to remove subsidy fully without plans to cushion the effect brought us this unprecedented pain, suffering and ultimately, poverty in this country,” Atiku declared.
