Just days to the Osun governorship poll, Atiku Abubakar says freezing the state's account is a direct hit on democracy itself.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has reportedly frozen the statutory allocation account of the Osun State Government, and the timing has everyone talking.

According to a report by Vanguard, as cited by cbinews.tv, former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has come out strongly against the move, describing it as a dangerous assault on democracy.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said there is simply no justification for such an action on the eve of a critical election.

He argued that freezing a state's main operational account at this moment could disrupt governance, delay workers' salaries, cripple essential public services and create an atmosphere of intimidation.

His words: “It is impossible to ignore the implications of freezing a state’s principal operational account on the eve of a governorship election. Such an action could disrupt governance, delay salary payments, impede essential public services and create an atmosphere of intimidation that has no place in a democratic society.”

Atiku stressed that if there are genuine concerns that need probing, the law already provides for due process. Anti-corruption agencies, he said, must not act in a way that makes it look like they are being used to influence political outcomes.

He added that Nigeria’s democracy rests not just on free and fair elections, but on public confidence that state institutions will act independently and professionally.

“The selective and politically convenient deployment of state institutions diminishes public trust and weakens the democratic order,” he noted.

The former VP also linked the development to what he described as a pattern under the President Bola Tinubu administration, recalling the earlier withholding of Osun’s statutory local government allocations.

“Coming after the prolonged denial of Osun State’s statutory local government allocations, this latest action reinforces the disturbing impression that public institutions are being weaponised to punish political opponents rather than serve the Nigerian people,” he said.

“Freezing the state’s allocation account is not merely an attack on the Osun State Government; it is a direct assault on the people of Osun State, whose salaries, essential public services and daily governance stand to suffer.”

He then called on all institutions involved in the Osun governorship election to act with restraint, impartiality and fidelity to the Constitution, insisting that only the people of Osun should decide the outcome.
