Atiku says poor governance has forced older politicians to remain active...
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that the state of governance in Nigeria has forced many older politicians to remain active in politics longer than they had originally planned.
CBI News reports that Atiku made the remark during an interview with SYMFONI TV, where he reflected on the country’s leadership challenges and their impact on political participation.
The former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate stated that Nigeria’s current situation falls short of what it should be under effective leadership, noting that better governance over the years would have allowed senior political figures to step aside for younger leaders.
He explained that persistent governance issues have made such a transition difficult, as experienced politicians feel compelled to remain involved in efforts to improve the system.
According to him, their continued participation is not driven by personal ambition, but by a sense of responsibility to push for better leadership, stronger institutions, and adherence to constitutional principles.
He said, “Nigeria has suffered from years of poor governance, and that is why many of us are still active in politics longer than we planned.
“Our continued presence in politics is not about personal ambition or gain. We remain in politics because we want to push for better leadership in the country. We are working toward stronger governance and a system that respects the constitution.”
