Atiku, ADC leaders protest alleged INEC partisanship
Former Nigerian presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar said on Wednesday he joined other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a peaceful protest against what he described as partisanship by the country’s electoral body, the independent national electoral commission (INEC).
Atiku said the demonstration, led by ADC National Chairman David Mark, was aimed at resisting alleged efforts to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
“This morning, I joined other patriotic leaders of the ADC, led by our National Chairman, Sen. David Mark, who sacrificed the comfort of his special day to participate in a peaceful protest,” Atiku said in a statement.
The former Vice President accused INEC of bias and criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying attempts to weaken democratic institutions would be resisted.
“I believe they received the message that this effort to undermine our democracy will not succeed. It will be resisted and challenged to the best of our abilities,” he said.
Atiku also called on the international community to pay attention to what he described as threats to Nigeria’s democracy and opposition.
“Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship,” he added.
The demonstration which was led by Senator David Mark drew the presence of prominent political figures including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, and Dino Melaye.
