Atiku says Nigeria's media should not be subjected to repeated regulatory pressure during election periods..
Nigeria’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised a recent advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), describing it as an attempt to restrict press freedom ahead of elections.
In a statement, Atiku said the directive was a “troubling attempt to muzzle the media and shrink the space for free expression” in the country.
He said that Nigeria’s media industry had earned global respect for its resilience and professionalism, but expressed concern that regulatory interventions tend to intensify during election periods.
According to him, such measures risk silencing dissenting voices rather than promoting ethical journalism.
The 2023 Presidential Candidate said he stood with broadcasters and other media platforms opposing what he described as “creeping censorship,” adding that ethical standards in journalism should be upheld consistently and not enforced selectively.
He also questioned the timing of the advisory, arguing that it suggested a broader effort to control public narratives instead of ensuring a free and transparent electoral process.
