Police confirm Kenya death toll from floods, landslides...
The National Police Service said that the death toll from flooding and landslides following heavy rains in Kenya has risen to at least 18.
Landslides were reported in Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Kiambu County in central and eastern parts of the country following sustained heavy rainfall, police said in a statement.
“The National Police Service has confirmed the loss of 18 lives as a result of these incidents, underscoring the grave danger posed by the ongoing weather conditions,” the police said.
The East African nation is experiencing heavy downpours at the peak of its March to May rainy season.
Flooding have damaged infrastructure and displaced thousands of residents in the country.
Kenya faced a similar disaster last year when intense rains triggered widespread flooding and landslides that killed more than 200 people and forced tens of thousands from their homes, according to government and humanitarian reports, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather during the seasonal rains.
