Islamists militants attack Woro village in Kwara...
At least 170 people were killed when armed men attacked a remote village in central Nigeria’s Kwara state, a local lawmaker told Reuters on Wednesday, as authorities and soldiers searched nearby bushland for survivors.
The assault on Woro village was the deadliest recorded this year in the district bordering Niger state, an area increasingly targeted by gunmen who raid communities, abduct residents and steal livestock.
Saidu Baba Ahmed, lawmaker representing Gwanabe/Gweria/Bani/Adena constituency in Kwara House Assembly, said Villagers fled into the surrounding bushland as the attackers struck on Tuesday.
He said the gunmen rounded up residents, tied their hands behind their backs and executed them.
Ahmed said homes and shops were also set ablaze during the raid. Reuters News agency said the Lawmaker shared photographs of bodies with it, but it could not immediately verify them at press time.
“As I’m speaking to you now, I’m in the village along with military personnel, sorting dead bodies and combing the surrounding areas for more,” Ahmed said by phone, adding that several people were still missing on Wednesday morning.
Residents said the attackers, believed to be jihadists who had previously preached in the village, demanded that locals renounce allegiance to the Nigerian state and adopt Sharia, or Islamic law. When villagers resisted, the militants opened fire during a sermon, residents said.
Kwara state police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyem said police and military units had been deployed to the area for search-and-rescue operations, but declined to confirm casualty figures.
