Gunners seek late transfer solution as midfielder faces season ending layoff.
Mikel Arteta said Arsenal are actively looking for a replacement for injured midfielder Mikel Merino as the transfer window enters its final hours.
Merino, a key contributor in both midfield and attack, could miss the remainder of the season after suffering a fractured right foot that requires surgery.
Arteta underlined the scale of the loss as Arsenal continue their pursuit of silverware on multiple fronts.
The Arsenal manager said the club is working to secure cover before Monday’s 1900 GMT transfer deadline.
The blow of Merino’s injury has been softened by the return to fitness of Germany forward Kai Havertz.
Arteta also offered a positive update on Bukayo Saka, who missed Saturday’s 4–0 Premier League win over Leeds because of injury.
Arsenal remain on track for an unprecedented quadruple. They hold a six point lead at the top of the Premier League, have reached the last 16 of the Champions League and will face third tier Wigan in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
However, Arteta said his immediate focus is on reaching the League Cup final, which would present the club’s first chance to end a six year trophy drought. Arsenal take a 3–2 lead into the second leg against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
