APC wins five councils in FCT election as PDP takes Gwagwalada...
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has consolidated its dominance in the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the 2027 general election, winning five out of the six Area Councils in Saturday’s polls.
The FCT Area Council elections held on February 21 saw the APC secure victories in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Kwali, Kuje, Bwari and Abaji, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) staged a comeback to claim Gwagwalada.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results in the early hours of Sunday.
INEC Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, declared Mohammed Kasim of the PDP as winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election.
Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat Yahaya Shehu of the APC, who scored 17,788 votes.
Akpen affirmed that Mohammed met the legal requirements to be returned as the duly elected chairman.
He described the electoral process as “peaceful and smooth,” despite the keen contest and high stakes involved.
In Kwali, INEC declared Daniel Nuhu of the APC as winner after polling 17,032 votes, defeating Haruna Pai of the PDP, who scored 8,575 votes.
Similarly, Joshua Ishaku of the APC emerged victorious in Bwari Area Council, securing 18,466 votes, according to Returning Officer Mohammed Nurudeen.
The commission also returned Zakka Christopher of the APC as chairman-elect of AMAC. Christopher polled 40,295 votes, defeating the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which scored 12,109 votes, while the PDP trailed with 3,398 votes.
In Abaji Area Council, Hon. Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC was declared winner after polling 15,535 votes.
He defeated the Young Progressives Party candidate, who scored 5,357 votes. The PDP followed with 4,547 votes, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) polled 53 votes and the ADC secured 37 votes.
INEC also declared Hon. Samuel Shekwolo of the APC winner of the Kuje Area Council election, further extending the party’s dominance in the FCT.
The outcome of the council polls has strengthened the APC’s foothold in the nation’s capital, positioning the party favourably ahead of the 2027 general election.
