The APC House of Representatives primaries across several states produced major political upsets, consensus candidates, and protests, as Yusuf Buhari, son of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, secured victory in Katsina.
According to cbinews.tv, the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday conducted its House of Representatives primary elections across several states ahead of the 2027 general elections, producing a mix of elected candidates, consensus arrangements, and protests in some constituencies.
The primaries, which were initially scheduled for Friday, were later shifted to Saturday by the ruling party. Ahead of the exercise, President Bola Tinubu urged party members to avoid infighting and “do-or-die” politics, calling on aspirants, delegates, and party leaders to embrace peace, fairness, and internal democracy.
One of the biggest highlights came from Katsina State, where Yusuf Muhammadu Buhari, son of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, defeated Auwal Lawal Musa, son of former DSS Director-General Lawal Musa Daura, to clinch the APC ticket for the Daura Federal Constituency.
In the Mani/Bindawa Federal Constituency, Governor Dikko Radda’s Special Assistant on Girl Child Education and Development, Hajiya Jamila Abdu Mani, emerged victorious after defeating Ahmed Saleh Junior.
The APC also adopted consensus arrangements in some constituencies. Former Katsina State Commissioner for Environment, Hamza Sule Faskari, was unanimously endorsed as the APC candidate for Kankara/Faskari/Sabuwa Federal Constituency, while Usman Murtala Banye emerged as consensus candidate for Rimi/Charanchi/Batagarawa.
In Kaduna State, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, secured an unopposed victory in the Zaria Federal Constituency after delegates from all 13 wards affirmed his candidacy for a fifth term.
Former lawmaker Samaila Suleiman also won the APC ticket for Kaduna North Federal Constituency after defeating Abdulaziz Kaka with a landslide victory.
Several other aspirants emerged winners across different constituencies in Kaduna, including Amos Gwamna in Zango Kataf/Jaba and former Commissioner for Public Works, Hamza Ibrahim, who clinched the Soba Federal Constituency ticket.
Meanwhile, APC primaries in Kebbi State were largely settled through consensus agreements.
Former lawmaker Bello Yakubu Rilisco emerged as the party’s flag bearer for Birnin Kebbi/Kalgo/Bunza Federal Constituency after other contenders stepped down.
In another major development, incumbent lawmaker Mansur Musa Jega lost his return ticket after a consensus arrangement produced former Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Jafar Ahmed Jega, as the APC candidate for Jega/Gwandu/Aleiro Federal Constituency.
The APC also reaffirmed incumbent lawmaker Salisu Garba Koko for Koko/Besse/Maiyama Federal Constituency, while former Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, returned to contest for Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency after stepping down from the Senate race.
However, not all the primaries ended peacefully.
In Kebbi State, supporters of rival aspirants protested the emergence of incumbent lawmaker Kabir Ibrahim Tukura in the Zuru/Fakai/Sakaba/Danko Wasagu Federal Constituency, alleging lack of transparency and accusing some party officials of compromise.
Niger State also witnessed tension in some constituencies, with reports of protests over alleged candidate imposition.
In Chanchaga Local Government Area, incumbent lawmaker Abubakar Audu Buba withdrew from the race after initially joining other aspirants contesting for the APC ticket.
Meanwhile, the APC primaries in Gurara/Tafa/Suleja and Shiroro federal constituencies reportedly failed to hold following disagreements among party members over alleged imposition of candidates.
The APC primaries are part of the ruling party’s early preparations for the 2027 general elections as aspirants continue to battle for tickets across the country.
