Annual Leave Over: Ekiti Governor Oyebanji Resumes Today

He’s back. After two weeks away from the Ado Ekiti Government House, Governor Biodun Oyebanji is officially back at his desk this Monday — and he’s got a second term to prepare for.
The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, will resume official duties on Monday, September 7th, 2026, following the conclusion of his two-week annual leave.
According to a statement released in Ado Ekiti on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Olayinka Oyebode, the break was part of the governor’s statutory annual leave entitlement.
And before you ask — no, it wasn’t a total switch-off. Oyebode disclosed that while on leave, Governor Oyebanji however, attended to crucial matters relating to governance and administration of the State.
The timing is interesting. Oyebanji actually commenced the leave on Monday, 24 August 2026, and his media team says he is resuming with renewed vigour as preparations for his second-term administration gather momentum.
A bit of background and why this resumption matters:
This isn’t just any return-to-office. Oyebanji is about to make history.
You’ll recall that on June 20, 2026, Oyebanji, flying the flag of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), won his re-election bid, defeating his opponents in all 16 local government areas of the state.
With 319,224 votes declared by INEC’s Chief Returning Officer Adenike Oladiji, he secured nearly 85 per cent of the valid votes cast. His closest rival, PDP’s Wole Oluyede, polled 40,533 votes.
That victory is huge in Ekiti’s political history. Since the return to democracy in 1999, no sitting governor in Ekiti had ever won a second term in office. From Niyi Adebayo to Ayo Fayose, Segun Oni to Kayode Fayemi — the infamous Ekiti second-term jinx held firm. Oyebanji has now broken it, becoming the first democratically elected governor in the state to win two consecutive terms. The APC itself described it as “historic”.
His first term winds down on October 15, with the second term kicking off on October 16 — so this resumption is essentially the final lap of term one and the warm-up for term two.
And he’s already setting the tone. After his victory, Oyebanji pledged to “consolidate on existing achievements” and told supporters: “The reward for hard work is more work.”
