From ancient Greek myths to modern-day heartbreak, Anne Carson has spent decades bending the rules of literature. Now, that distinctive style has earned her the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Canadian poet, essayist and classicist Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the latest writer to receive one of the world’s most prestigious literary honours.
The Swedish Academy praised her for a bold and inventive body of work that brings classical traditions into conversation with contemporary literature.
Born in Toronto in 1950, the 76-year-old Carson is known for mixing poetry, prose, fiction and translations, often drawing on ancient Greek literature to explore very human themes: love, desire, loss and despair.
Her best-known works include Autobiography of Red, Eros the Bittersweet and Norma Jeane Baker of Troy.
And there is a personal twist to the announcement. Carson was reportedly in Iceland, listening to the wind, when she learnt she had won.
The prize comes with 12 million Swedish kronor, worth roughly 1.2 million US dollars.
Carson now joins a long line of Nobel literature laureates, with the award continuing its 1901 tradition of recognising writers whose work has had a lasting impact on literature.
She is expected to receive the Nobel medal and diploma in Stockholm in December.
