The high-profile trial linked to the deadly Angwan Rukuba killings in Plateau State resumes today, with prosecutors pushing forward terrorism and homicide charges against four suspects accused of masterminding the attack that reportedly claimed more than 30 lives.
CBI News reports that proceedings resumed today in the closely watched Angwan Rukuba killings case as the court prepares for a crucial Case Management Conference ahead of the commencement of full trial.
The defendants — identified as Isa Umar Ibrahim, Auwalu Abubakar popularly known as Auwalu Dogo, Musa Abubakar Ibrahim also known as Yaroro, and Adamu Isa Alhassan — are facing multiple charges filed by the Plateau State Government, including criminal conspiracy, terrorism, culpable homicide, illegal possession of firearms, and illegal dealing in arms and ammunition.
The suspects had earlier pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against them.
At the previous hearing, the court ordered that the defendants remain in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) pending the conclusion of investigations and further judicial proceedings.
The prosecution team, led by Plateau State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Philemon Audu Daffi, argued that continued DSS custody was necessary due to ongoing investigations and efforts to apprehend additional suspects reportedly still at large.
Defence lawyers opposed the request, citing concerns over restricted access to their clients. However, the court subsequently directed the DSS to allow defence counsel adequate access to the defendants.
Today’s sitting is expected to centre on the Case Management Conference — a key legal stage that will determine how the substantive trial proceeds in the high-stakes case that has drawn national attention.
The Angwan Rukuba attack, which occurred in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, reportedly left over 30 people dead and triggered widespread outrage and demands for justice across the state.
According to court filings, the Plateau State Government accused the defendants of conspiring to carry out acts of terrorism linked to the March 28, 2025 attack in Angwan Rukuba.
The charge sheet alleges that the suspects planned, organised, facilitated, financed, and contributed resources toward executing the deadly attack in Jos North Local Government Area.
Authorities said the suspects were arrested between April 3 and April 10, 2026.
The state government maintained that the offences committed by the defendants violate Sections 269 and 270 of the Plateau State Penal Code Law, 2017.
