History has been made in Paris! Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva has announced herself on the biggest stage in tennis, clinching her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and becoming the youngest French Open women's champion in more than three decades.
Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva has etched her name into the history books after winning her first Grand Slam title at the French Open, reports cbinewstv.
The 19-year-old produced a superb performance to defeat Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in Saturday’s final at Roland Garros. With the victory, Andreeva became the youngest women’s singles champion in Paris since Monica Seles lifted the trophy as an 18-year-old in 1992.
The triumph is even more remarkable as Andreeva is now the first player, male or female, born after 2005 to win a Grand Slam title.
Despite the straight-sets scoreline, the final began nervously for both players, with windy conditions making life difficult on Centre Court. Chwalinska, who entered the tournament through qualifying and won nine matches to reach the final, showed plenty of fight and flair throughout the contest.
However, Andreeva’s composure, powerful shot-making and mental strength proved decisive. After taking control of the opening set, she never looked back, racing through the second set before sealing victory with a stunning backhand winner.
The emotional moment saw the young Russian collapse to her knees in celebration as she secured the biggest title of her career so far. The prestigious Coupe Suzanne Lenglen now joins her growing collection of silverware, which already includes two WTA 1000 titles.
Although Chwalinska fell short of the title, her remarkable run in Paris is set to transform her career, with the world number 114 projected to climb to number 21 in the rankings and gain regular entry into the sport’s biggest events.
For Andreeva, this could be just the beginning of a new era in women's tennis.
