Despite renewed pressure over the controversial “Farmgate” scandal, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has received strong backing from the ANC leadership, with party officials insisting his resignation is not being considered.

The party’s National Executive Committee met this week and reaffirmed confidence in Ramaphosa, according to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula. Speaking in Johannesburg, Mbalula said discussions about recalling the president or asking him to resign were “not on the table.”

The scandal, widely referred to by local media as “Farmgate,” centers on the theft of about $580,000 in foreign currency hidden inside furniture at Ramaphosa’s private ranch in 2020.

Critics have questioned how the cash was acquired, whether it was officially declared, and why it was stored at the farm instead of in a bank.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and is preparing a legal challenge against an independent panel report that found preliminary evidence of misconduct.

The controversy resurfaced after South Africa’s constitutional court revived impeachment proceedings against the president last week.

The next stage will see parliament establish a committee to further investigate the allegations.

Although the ANC lost its parliamentary majority in the 2024 elections, the party still controls around 40% of seats in the National Assembly, making any impeachment vote an uphill battle for the opposition.

Political analysts believe Ramaphosa is likely to survive the process, with his current presidential term expected to run until 2029.
