Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has spoken out strongly against the latest wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, declaring that “Africans cannot be running from Africa” as he received the prestigious Industry Merit Award at the 12th edition of the AMVCA in Lagos.
Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has condemned the renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa, calling on Africans across the continent to unite and defend one another.
CBI News notes that the actor made the passionate statement on Saturday night while receiving the Industry Merit Award at the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), one of Africa’s biggest film and television events.
During his acceptance speech, Kanayo expressed deep concern over reports of violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa and urged Africans to collectively reject hatred and division.
“I’m not happy about what is going on in South Africa today. Our voices must rise against the xenophobic attacks on every African. There must be somewhere Africans will call their home,” he said.
“We are not happy about what is happening in South Africa, and everybody should lend his or her voice because we, as Africans, cannot be running from Africa.”
His comments come amid fresh unrest in parts of South Africa following Freedom Day celebrations. Reports indicate that at least two Nigerians and four Ethiopians were killed, while businesses owned by migrants in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town were looted and burnt.
Viral videos circulating online also showed foreign nationals being harassed and told to “fix their own countries,” sparking outrage across Africa.
The Nigerian government has since summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner and announced plans to support citizens willing to return home. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also condemned the attacks as authorities intensify security operations in affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has begun arrangements for the voluntary evacuation of over 130 Nigerians affected by the crisis.
