Can 2,545 polling units stay calm for one big Saturday? Ekiti’s about to find out.
As reported by cbinews.tv, the Nigeria Police Force says it’s all set for the Ekiti governorship election this Saturday, June 20, 2026.
On Friday, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Election Security, CP Shogule Abayomi, confirmed that officers have now been deployed to every single one of the 2,545 polling units across Ekiti State.
It’s part of what he calls a “multi-layered security architecture” — basically, they’re not taking chances. The idea is to make sure the election is peaceful, credible, and hitch-free from start to finish.
So, what does that actually mean on the ground? According to CP Abayomi, security personnel and operational assets have been strategically placed not just at polling units, but also at key spots like critical infrastructure, major roads in and out of the state, border communities, and other places flagged as vital to the process. The goal: keep voters, INEC officials, observers, and sensitive materials safe throughout the exercise.
“As things stand, security coverage has been extended to all 2,545 polling units,” Abayomi said. “Personnel and assets are positioned to ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials, election observers, and sensitive electoral materials.”
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, also weighed in. He assured the public that every officer on election duty has been briefed on their responsibilities and the rules of engagement. Expect them to act professionally, impartially, and strictly within the law, he added.
But there’s a warning, too. Abayomi was clear that electoral offences won’t be tolerated. Anything that undermines the integrity of the vote will face sanctions under the Electoral Act and other relevant laws.
His message to voters? Turn up, vote peacefully, and don’t let fear or intimidation stop you. He also cautioned against spreading unverified info that could cause panic or disrupt public order.
If you spot any security concerns, the police have an election emergency line that’ll be active all through the period: 080062335577.
For context, no fewer than 13 political parties are contesting in Saturday’s governorship race.
