Four fresh faces just joined the Senate, and Akpabio had some words of advice for the newest members of "the most elite club in the world".
Four new senators officially took their seats in the Red Chamber on Wednesday after winning last Saturday’s bye-elections. Senate President Godswill Akpabio oversaw the swearing-in ceremony, welcoming the lawmakers following INEC’s recent polls.
Here’s who got sworn in:
Olaka Nwogu (PDP) – now representing Rivers South East, stepping in after the passing of Barinada Mpigi.
Envulu Anza (APC) – taking over Nasarawa North following the death of Godiya Akwaashiki.
Ikeje Asogwu (APC) – the new man for Enugu North, succeeding the late Okechukwu Ezea.
Dayo Faduyile (APC) – representing Ondo South, after Jimoh Ibrahim was appointed Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
The Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered both the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office during plenary.
Akpabio didn’t waste time rolling out the welcome mat. He congratulated the senators and called the Senate “a family of the most elite club in the world”. But he also kept it real, urging them to put Nigeria first, not party politics, and focus on national development.
His advice? Get familiar with the 1999 Constitution and the updated 2023 Senate Standing Orders if they want to hit the ground running.
The ceremony drew a few big names too, including Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the state’s Attorney-General, Kayode Ajulo.
