Picture this — exam day turns into a nightmare, then military jets show up and flip the script.
According to cbinews.tv, the Nigerian Air Force says it was air surveillance and solid intelligence that made the difference in rescuing students and teachers kidnapped from Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Borno State.
The whole thing went down on Monday. Suspected terrorists stormed the school in Askira/Uba Local Government Area right as candidates were sitting their NECO SSCE exams. Not the kind of exam stress anyone signs up for.
NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, put out a statement on Tuesday confirming the rescue. He said the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, was quick to praise how fast they got Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance assets in the air. That air support basically scattered the attackers, giving ground troops the opening they needed to move in.
Air Marshal Aneke reckoned this shows just how well intelligence-led joint ops can work — protecting civilians while keeping the heat on terrorist groups. He gave a shout-out to the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI and the ground troops who pulled it off.
Even the rescued victims backed it up. Their accounts highlighted how crucial air power is when you pair it with boots on the ground. Sadly, it wasn’t without loss — a soldier from Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force died during the mission. Air Marshal Aneke paid tribute to them.
Paul Namaske, the school’s Vice Principal, described what happened from the ground. He said once the military aircraft showed up, the terrorists bolted in different directions. That chaos gave the students and teachers a chance to escape while troops closed in on the attackers’ location.
The military says operations are still ongoing in the North-East to push back terrorist groups and bring some stability to the region.
