MSF hospital hit in Jonglei amid clashes between government and opposition forces.
Renewed fighting in South Sudan’s Jonglei state between government forces and fighters loyal to First Vice President Riek Machar has raised fears of a return to full-scale civil war.
The UN says about 280,000 people have been displaced by clashes and airstrikes since December in the food-insecure region.
Medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières said it evacuated its hospital in Lankien ahead of an air attack after receiving warnings, but one staff member was injured and its main warehouse and medical supplies were destroyed.
MSF said South Sudan’s armed forces are the only group with the capacity to carry out aerial attacks, though responsibility has not been confirmed.
The charity warned it is the sole healthcare provider for around 250,000 people in Lankien and Pieri.
Fighting first erupted in 2013 between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and Machar. A 2018 peace deal ended the civil war that killed nearly 400,000 people but was never fully implemented.
