Big shake-up in the Green Chamber — Bayelsa just bagged the top opposition seat as Frederick Agbedi takes over from defector Kingsley Chinda.
Here’s the lowdown from cbinews.tv:
So, it’s official. Frederick Agbedi, who represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in Bayelsa State, is the new Minority Leader of the House of Representatives as of Thursday.
How did we get here? Well, the spot opened up after former Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda from Rivers State jumped ship — he left the PDP for the ruling APC. That defection left a pretty big gap in the opposition caucus, and the minority members clearly wanted it sorted.
The caucus sent a letter to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during plenary on Thursday saying they’d reached a consensus. No drama, no floor fights — just a clean sweep of the vacant principal offices.
Speaker Abbas read it out:
“Number one is the Minority Leader, Hon Frederick Agbedi. Number two is the position of minority whip, and the person they have endorsed is Hon Mansur Soro (APM, Bauchi). The last but not the least is my brother from the North-West, Hon Abdussamad Dasuki (ADC, Sokoto) for the position of Deputy Minority Leader.”
He added: “Honourable colleagues, today the body of principal officers is complete, and I want to seize this opportunity on behalf of the whole entire House to congratulate the three people and to wish them all the best in their new positions.”
So, what does this mean? Agbedi now leads the charge for opposition lawmakers in the House. He’ll be the one coordinating them and making sure the minority parties actually have a united voice on bills and debates.
And he’s not new to this. Agbedi has been repping Sagbama/Ekeremor since 2011, making him one of the longest-serving members in the House. That experience could come in handy, especially with all the defections and political reshuffling happening before the 2027 elections.
With Mansur Soro of APM now Minority Whip and Abdussamad Dasuki of ADC as Deputy Minority Leader, the opposition leadership team is fully locked in.
Abbas congratulated all three and promised the House leadership would work with them.
