The African sporting community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Confederation of African Athletics President, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, whose leadership helped shape and elevate athletics across the continent for decades.
According to reports by cbinews.tv, the sporting world is mourning the passing of Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, President of the Confederation of African Athletics, who died on Wednesday at the age of 75 at his residence in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Tributes have continued to pour in for the veteran Cameroonian sports administrator, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential figures in athletics and sports governance.
World Athletics expressed sadness over his passing, while its President, Sebastian Coe, described Malboum as a man known for his determination, leadership, and kindness.
The President of Athletics Kenya, Jackson Tuwei, praised the late administrator’s dedication and passion, saying his contributions significantly transformed athletics across Africa.
Before rising through the ranks of global sports administration, Malboum had a military career and represented Cameroon in sprinting, long jump, and relay events during the 1970s.
He later dedicated nearly three decades to athletics development, Olympic administration, and sports governance across the African continent.
At the time of his death, Malboum served as President of the International Military Sports Council, Cameroon’s National Olympic and Sports Committee, and the Association of African Olympic Sports Confederations. He was also a council member of World Athletics.
Under his leadership, African athletics witnessed major growth through athlete development initiatives, improved continental competitions, and increased African representation on the global stage.
His death comes as the African Senior Athletics Championships is currently taking place in Accra, Ghana — an event he was expected to attend.
