Abia has a new top cop! The Abia State Police Command has a new sheriff in town, and he comes with over 30 years of experience, both at home and abroad.

Abia State has officially welcomed its 35th Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi.

According to a statement issued on August 10, 2026, by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, CP Afolabi has assumed duty with immediate effect.

He takes over from AIG Danladi Isa, who was recently promoted and redeployed to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Annex, Kaduna.

And who exactly is the new CP? He is no newcomer to policing.

CP Afolabi joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992. That is more than three decades of service in strategic, operational, administrative and even international roles.

Academically, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany from the University of Ilorin, plus a Postgraduate Diploma and a Master’s degree in Peace and Security Studies from the University of Port Harcourt.

His training record is extensive. It includes the Strategic Leadership and Command Course at the National Institute of Police Studies, Abuja; Tactical Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos; Internal Security/Low Intensity Conflict Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji; and a Peacekeeping Negotiation Course at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Ghana.

On the international scene, CP Afolabi has also made his mark. Between 2004 and 2005, he served as pioneer Sector Commander of Sector 2, Nyala, and pioneer Regional Commander of Southern Darfur under the African Union Mission in Sudan, where he helped establish police structures and set up stations in internally displaced persons’ camps.

Before that, from 2001 to 2002, he served as Nigeria Contingent Commander and Special Response Unit Officer under the Human Rights Section of the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Back home, his most recent posting before Abia was as Commissioner of Police, Administration, Training and Development, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. He has also served as Commissioner of Police in Ondo State and as CP, Force Equitation Officer, Mounted Troop.

His career journey has also taken him to Delta, Katsina and Bayelsa as Deputy Commissioner of Police, as well as Anambra, Imo and the FCT in various command capacities. He has also served as Directing Staff at the Police Staff College, Jos, where he trained and mentored senior officers.

The Command describes him as a disciplined, strategic and result-oriented officer whose career reflects a commitment to public safety and professional excellence.

The Command is now calling on all stakeholders, traditional and community leaders, civil society organisations and residents of the state to give the new Commissioner their full support and cooperation as he settles into his new role.
