Pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere has raised alarm over the recent attacks on schools in Oyo State, warning that terrorists and kidnappers may be targeting the South-West region if urgent security measures are not taken.
According to cbinews.tv, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has strongly condemned the recent coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria, calling on South-West governors to urgently strengthen security across the region.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the group expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity in the South-West, describing the attacks as disturbing and unacceptable.
Afenifere disclosed that its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, was particularly saddened by the incident, especially as it happened during the same week he celebrated his 100th birthday.
“Pa Fasoranti was saddened to hear of this unfortunate incident,” the statement noted.
The elder statesman also sympathised with the victims, their families, and those injured during the attacks, while praying for the quick recovery of survivors.
The group said recent incidents of kidnapping, attacks, and insecurity across parts of the South-West and neighbouring Kwara State have heightened fears that criminal groups and terrorists may be attempting to establish stronger footholds in the region.
According to Afenifere, the pattern of attacks has reinforced concerns that terrorists are becoming increasingly emboldened.
The organisation also questioned whether governors in the South-West fully appreciate the seriousness of the security threats confronting the region.
Ajayi pointed to several security initiatives previously announced by South-West governors, including surveillance systems, security infrastructure, and special operations, asking what had become of those plans.
The group referenced the CCTV infrastructure reportedly installed by the Ogun State Government, surveillance aircraft acquired by the Oyo State Government, and other security measures announced in Ondo State.
“In view of the fact that the primary duty of government is the security and welfare of the people, governments in the South-Western states of Nigeria must prove that they are alive to their constitutionally assigned responsibilities,” the statement read.
Afenifere stressed that every possible effort must be made to prevent further attacks by kidnappers, bandits, and terrorists anywhere in the South-West region.
The organisation urged governors in the six South-West states to make the protection of lives and property their top priority.
“Every necessary step must be taken to ensure that terrorists do not have a place, not to talk of a foothold, in Yorubaland — from Lagos up to Kogi, including Edo and Delta states,” the group stated.
Despite its concerns, Afenifere commended the swift response of the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, who visited the scene of the incident shortly after the attacks.
The group also praised the inauguration of the Police Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), expressing hope that the initiative would help tackle kidnapping, banditry, and violent crimes more effectively.
Afenifere concluded by reminding both the Federal Government and state governors that security and welfare remain their constitutional responsibilities, urging leaders at all levels to act decisively before insecurity escalates further in the region.
