The road to AFCON 2027 is officially underway as African football giants discovered their opponents during Tuesday’s qualifying draw in Cairo ahead of the tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
African football fans now know the battle lines for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after CAF conducted the official draw in Cairo on Tuesday, according to cbinews.tv.
Defending champions Ivory Coast were drawn in Group C alongside Ghana, Gambia and Somalia in what promises to be one of the standout groups of the qualifiers.
Meanwhile, tournament hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are already guaranteed places at AFCON 2027, while Morocco headline Group A with Gabon, Niger and Lesotho.
Other exciting fixtures include South Africa taking on Guinea in Group D, while Senegal will battle Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia in Group J.
CAF confirmed that the top two teams from each group will qualify for the 24-team tournament. However, Groups D, H and L — which contain the three co-host nations — will only produce one qualifying team apart from the automatically qualified hosts.
The qualification campaign will be played across three international windows between September this year and March next year, with teams scheduled to play two matches per window.
AFCON 2027 will run from June 19 to July 17 across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in what is expected to be a historic East African football festival.
