Nigeria’s political landscape is heating up ahead of 2027, as mass defections rock opposition parties—prompting Senate President Godswill Akpabio to boldly declare the African Democratic Congress “dead.”
CBI News reports that Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stirred political debate after suggesting that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is no longer viable, following a wave of defections by lawmakers.
Akpabio made the statement on Tuesday during plenary while formally announcing the resignation of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South, from the ADC.
Reading Abaribe’s resignation letter on the Senate floor, Akpabio used the moment to call for a more organized system of announcing defections—before delivering a blunt assessment of the party’s state.
“All those defecting from ADC should compile their names together so we don’t keep announcing one by one… I think ADC is dead,” he said.
Wave of Defections Across Parties
The political shake-up did not stop with Abaribe, who is now moving to the Labour Party Nigeria just weeks after joining ADC.
Other notable defections include:
Senator Victor Umeh, who left ADC to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)
Senator Rufai Hanga, who defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the NDC
At the House of Representatives, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas also announced multiple defections, with several lawmakers abandoning the ADC for the NDC and other parties.
Additionally, Hon. Leke Abejide defected from ADC to the All Progressives Congress.
2027 Political Realignment Gains Momentum
These high-profile defections signal intensifying political realignments as parties reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts say the shifting alliances could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political power structure in the coming months.
