But the worry goes beyond transport and food.

Musa Natra, a civil servant, believes government must go beyond salary increases and introduce effective price control to check the rising cost of goods and services.

For his part, Obinna Amadi says the harsh economic reality has left many civil servants struggling with housing.

He charged the government to be more flexible in its approach to payment of workers’ entitlements.

Abuja is one of the most expensive cities to live in Nigeria. Recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows food inflation above 40 percent and transport costs up by over 70 percent year on year after fuel subsidy removal.

For a civil servant on Grade Level 8 earning around 130 thousand naira monthly, spending 90 thousand naira on transport alone leaves almost nothing for rent, feeding and school fees. The People are not asking for luxury. They are asking to survive.
