Heads up, Abuja drivers, if your windows are dark, your number plate is covered, or your papers aren’t complete, the FCT Police are coming for you. Over 30 vehicles have already been impounded.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command kicked off a full enforcement drive across Abuja on Friday, and they’re not playing. According to FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi, who briefed journalists at the command, the operation is targeting tinted glasses, obscured number plates, and dodgy registrations, cbinews reports.
Why now? Sanusi says it’s all about crime. Intelligence reports show that ‘one-chance’ robbers, kidnappers and other violent criminals deliberately use tinted vehicles to hide their identities and evade arrest.
“The IG has given us the mandate to begin the enforcement,” Sanusi said, referring to Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu. “Many criminal elements deliberately use such vehicles to conceal their identities, evade detection, and frustrate law enforcement efforts. This poses a serious threat to public safety.”
He was quick to stress it’s not about punishing law-abiding residents: “This exercise is not intended in any way to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, but it is to deny criminals the cover they exploit.”
So far, more than 30 cars have been seized, and the owners won’t just pay a fine and drive off. Sanusi confirmed they’ll be charged to court under the FCT Road Transport Regulations Act, 2023.
The police are also asking residents to help out, stay vigilant and report any suspicious vehicles or behaviour to the nearest station or via the command’s emergency lines.
There’s a bit of confusion around the wider policy though. You’ll remember the Nigeria Police Force suspended the nationwide tinted glass permit enforcement on 1 January 2026 after a court order, even though they’d announced it would restart on 2 January. It’s still unclear if that order has been vacated, but in the FCT, the ban is now being actively enforced.
