If your car windows are tinted and you’re driving through Abuja, the FCT Police might be pulling you over next — and it’s all because of a wave of “one-chance” robberies.
So, here’s what’s going on in Abuja right now. The FCT Police have officially started enforcing the ban on tinted glass vehicles, and they’re not playing around.
Why the sudden crackdown? According to CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, who spoke at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, it’s down to those notorious “one-chance” criminals. These guys have been using cars with tinted windows, hidden number plates, and even unregistered vehicles to run their operations across the capital.
CP Sanusi said intelligence reports show criminals are “deliberately using such vehicles to conceal their identities, evade detection, and frustrate law enforcement efforts”. In his words, “this poses a serious threat to public safety.”
The order actually came from the top — Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, told the FCT Command to kick off a full enforcement operation targeting any vehicle flouting these rules.
Now, before you panic if you’ve got legal tints: the CP stressed this isn’t about making life hard for law-abiding drivers who have proper approval. It’s about stripping criminals of the cover they use to target innocent residents.
Already, over 30 vehicles have been impounded for rocking illegal tints, obscured plates, or no registration at all. And the owners? They’re heading to court under the Laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations (2023).
