If you ride a bike in Abia, listen up – the state govt isn’t joking. New rules, big fines, and a 30-day deadline just dropped.
So, here’s the gist, as reported by cbinews.tv. The Abia State government has come out strong on motorcycle regulation. Basically, if you’ve got a private or commercial motorcycle anywhere in the state, you’ve got to register it now with a unique number. No stories.
And if your okada was seized after the recent ban in Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, you’ve got 30 days from the day it was impounded to pay up. The fine? A solid N50,000 to the State government. Miss that deadline and, well, your bike becomes Abia State property. Just like that.
According to State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, who briefed journalists on Tuesday in Umuahia after the executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, there’s more. If you’re riding in areas where okada is still allowed, you must have a unique registration number and wear a reflective vest showing the local government you operate in.
Kanu was quick to say the ban isn’t meant to punish struggling citizens. It’s about “the overriding interests of Abia people” – basically, security first. He also made it clear: the ban on commercial okada in Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia isn’t being reversed anytime soon.
Now, why all the strictness? Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, flagged a new worry. Tricycle operators banned in other Southeast and South South states are now trooping into Abia. That’s raising red flags for security. Ekeoma says Abia people need protection from any threats linked to unregulated transport.
Backing that up, the Governor’s Chief Security Adviser, Navy Commander Mac Donald Ubah (Rtd), said Abia is just being proactive. The idea is to stop the kind of security wahala happening in other states before it starts here.
So yeah, if you’re an okada rider in Abia – register, get your vest, or risk losing your bike.
