Barely a week after calling off its last industrial action, lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University are downing tools again, and this time, they say there is no going back until the government acts.

It is back to square one at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, AAUA branch, has declared a total and indefinite strike over what it describes as the Ondo State Government’s failure to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.

Confirming the development to the media on Tuesday, August 11 2026, in Akure, the branch Chairman, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, said the decision was taken after several letters and requests for meetings were ignored by the government.

According to reports by cbinews.tv, this fresh strike is coming just days after the union suspended an earlier action over unpaid salary backlogs. That suspension followed the payment of outstanding salaries.

But according to Prof. Oshodi, this time around, promises will not be enough.

He was quite blunt about it: members will not return to the lecture rooms on mere commitments. What they want is concrete action.

“The union has just declared an indefinite, total, and comprehensive strike over the non-implementation of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/ASUU 2025 agreement. The resolution is that if that agreement is not implemented here, and the arrears from January are not paid, we are not going to resume. We are not ready to listen to anything like commitment again. What we want now is action,” he said.

Oshodi also questioned why Ondo State, which is an oil-producing state, is lagging when several other states have already commenced implementation of the agreement.

On whether the union is open to intervention from the state governor, he said dialogue is still possible, but work will not resume until implementation begins and all arrears from January to date are fully paid.

The FGN-ASUU 2025 agreement, as reported by cbinews.tv, includes an upgraded salary structure with a 40 per cent review for academic staff and the payment of accumulated salary arrears.

The AAUA development comes just a day after the ASUU branch at Imo State University, Owerri, also declared a total and indefinite strike over the failure of the Imo State Government and the university management to implement an agreement on improved welfare and conditions of service.
