Heartbreak in Alakija as nine lives are lost in a preventable building collapse — and Lagos State says it’s done with warnings.
Residents of Alakija, in Ori-Ade LCDA, are still reeling after a three-storey building came down on Thursday, killing nine people and leaving several others injured. Lagos State has now vowed to pull down every building it’s already flagged as unsafe in the area.
Eyewitnesses say panic broke out when the building suddenly gave way, trapping people under the rubble.
“We heard a loud sound, and everyone started running. People were screaming for help while neighbours rushed to rescue those trapped before emergency officials arrived,” resident Chinedu Edwin told cbinews.tv.
Another eyewitness, Abayomi Ibrahim, said emergency teams spent hours combing through the debris for survivors.
On Friday, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, visited the site. Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, he sympathised with the families of the victims and praised first responders for moving quickly.
According to Omotoso, 27 people were rescued, but nine didn’t make it. The rescue effort pulled in LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASBCA, the police, the military, and other agencies.
The tough bit? The building had already been marked as structurally distressed. Occupants were told to vacate, but the directive was ignored, Omotoso told cbinews.tv.
Now, the government says every other building already marked unsafe in the area will be demolished. “We won’t compromise on residents’ safety,” he stressed. Anyone found violating building regulations or obstructing enforcement will face legal action.
Omotoso also slammed the practice of putting up buildings under high-tension power lines, calling it dangerous. Investigations into the collapse have started, and survivors are receiving treatment at various hospitals.
His message to residents: comply with safety directives. “Protecting lives remains the Lagos State Government’s top priority,” he added.
