What should have been a night of joy for PSG fans turned chaotic, with hundreds arrested, dozens injured, and one person killed as celebrations spilled into violence across France
According to cbinewstv, celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League triumph over Arsenal descended into violence across France, leading to the arrest of 780 people nationwide.
Thousands of jubilant PSG supporters flooded the streets of Paris and other cities to celebrate the club’s latest European success. However, what began as scenes of celebration quickly turned disorderly in several locations as groups of revellers clashed with police.
French authorities had deployed around 22,000 security personnel across the country in anticipation of potential unrest, following similar incidents during PSG’s Champions League celebrations last year.
Speaking at a press briefing, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez revealed that 57 members of the security forces were injured during the disturbances. He also said a total of 219 people were hurt across France, including eight who sustained serious injuries.
Authorities noted a growing trend of fireworks being aimed directly at law enforcement officers during the unrest.
The Paris public prosecutor’s office also confirmed the death of a young man following a motocross bike crash on the Paris ring road. In a separate incident, another person was critically injured after being attacked with a bladed weapon in the French capital.
Nunez disclosed that the 780 arrests represented a 32 per cent increase compared to the number recorded during PSG’s Champions League celebrations last year.
The incidents have once again raised concerns about public safety and crowd control during major football celebrations in France.
