Kwara governor describes killings in Woro and Nuku as a targeted massacre....
Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has disclosed that at least 75 residents were killed during a brutal attack on two villages in Kaiama Local Government Area for resisting extremists who attempted to impose what he described as a “strange doctrine” on the communities.
The governor made the revelation on Wednesday during a visit to Kaiama LGA, where he was accompanied by security chiefs and members of the state executive council.
He described the killings as a cowardly act born out of frustration by terrorist elements operating in the area.
CBI News reports that the attacks reportedly occurred on Tuesday evening in the villages of Woro and Nuku, where gunmen allegedly stormed the communities, rounded up residents, tied their hands and shot them indiscriminately.
Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the attack began around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
She added that security personnel had been deployed to the affected areas, noting that while casualty figures were still being verified, reports of missing persons were under investigation.
Governor AbdulRazaq, however, said intelligence reports available to him confirmed that 75 people were killed during the assault.
A video shared on the Kwara State Government’s official X handle showed the governor in a traditional palace, flanked by military officers and community leaders, as he commiserated with survivors and conveyed assurances of federal intervention.
In the video, AbdulRazaq linked the massacre to the villagers’ refusal to accept extremist teachings.
“We commiserate with you over the death of 75 of your subjects. May Allah grant them aljana Firdaus,” the governor said.
“And from the information I’ve been getting, this village refuses to succumb to a perverted form of Islamic doctrine.
“They (terrorists) are lying under their immolation, abiding by their Islamic faith. And these villagers, they don’t want any alteration.
“And because they refuse to change doctrine in their faith, they were attacked and massacred.
“It’s different from what we used to see, where subjects are kidnapped or ransacked. But this was just a pure massacre. And it’s something truly condemned.”
In response to the attack, the governor announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate deployment of an army battalion under Operation Savannah Shield to carry out counter-offensive operations against those responsible for the killings.
